Two Weeks Before Surgery
Preoperative Assessment
One to two weeks prior to your surgery, a Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital registered nurse will call you for a preoperative assessment. If you would like to schedule a particular time for the nurse to call you, please call us at 402.637.0600 and we will arrange for convenient time the nurse will call you.
During this call, you will be asked to give essential information which will aid us in your surgery. Please have the following information available:
Medical History
Print out the Medical History form by clicking on the link below. The phone call with the nurse will be much easier and faster if you have organized your information prior to the call. It is CRITICAL that we have an accurate list of all medications, herbal, and over-the-counter prescriptions you take along with your medical, surgical, allergy, and family medical history.
Insurance Information
We need this information to prepare for your visit and to obtain your contact information. Our representative will advise you about co-payments and/or deductible for your visit depending on your insurance carrier. If you do not have insurance or have any specific questions about your payment options, you may be referred to one of our financial counselors.
Medications
Blood Thinning Agents
Your surgeon should have instructed you to discontinue Coumadin (Warfarin), Plavix or any other blood thinning agents one week prior to your surgery. Be sure to discuss this with your prescribing physician to be sure that it is safe to do so. If it is not safe for you to discontinue this type of medication, have your physician contact the surgeon as soon as possible.
Diet Medications
You must discontinue using diet medications and herbal diet products one week prior to your surgery. Diet medications could interact with medications given during your surgery. Failure to discontinue diet medications will result in your surgery being cancelled.
Primary Care Physician
Medical History
Please give your primary care physician the NOH Preoperative History and Physical Form and request all results be faxed to 402-637-0675 at least two days prior to surgery. You can print this form by clicking on the link below.
We have provided a form with guidelines for tests to assist your physician in obtaining information regarding your current health status. We must have this information at least two days prior to your surgery. If you are going to be an inpatient and your doctor does not see patients at Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital, your surgeon will assist in coordinating a primary care physician. This physician will supervise your inpatient care and communicate with your primary care physician.
Physical and Tests
Call your primary care physician to schedule an appointment if you were directed to have a physical or test done prior to surgery. Both must be completed within two weeks of your actual surgery day.
Joint Class
If you are a hip, knee, or shoulder replacement patient, you can schedule a time to attend a Joint Class at Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital. We
offer a class at least two times per month for patients and their families to attend. This class is very helpful in preparing you for your joint replacement surgery.
If you cannot attend a class, please ask the hospital employee to have a class notebook sent to your home.
Call 402.637.0600 to schedule a time for the class.
Tours
Plan to visit the hospital on a Thursday at 4:00 p.m. if you would like a tour before your surgery. You do not need to make an appointment. Please tell the receptionist at the front desk you are here for a tour.
