Graston Technique

The Graston Technique is a specialized form of soft tissue mobilization used to treat soft tissue (muscle, tendon, ligament, fascia) problems. It involves use of patented stainless steel instruments to identify and treat areas of soft tissue dysfunction and pain. The instruments release adhesions and restrictions in tissue to relieve pain, increase circulation, and improve motion. Both Physical and Occupational Therapists at Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital are trained in the Graston Technique, incorporating this technique into daily therapy rehabilitation.

The technique primarily separates and breaks down collagen cross-links by splaying and stretching connective tissue and muscle fibers. The Graston instruments are specifically designed to adapt to various tissues, shapes, and curves of the body.

The Graston Technique can be utilized for the care of acute and chronic conditions, including:

  • Cervical Sprain/Strain (neck pain)
  • Lumbar Sprain/Strain (back pain)
  • Stiffness following surgery (i.e. knee replacement)
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Patellar Tendonitis/Tendonosis
  • Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)
  • Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer’s Elbow)
  • Rotator Cuff Tendonitis/Tendonosis
  • Achilles Tendonitis/Tendonosis
  • Trigger Points
  • Shin Splints
  • Scar Tissue
  • Patellofemoral Disorders
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
